The Walk

Camino Map

I will begin walking the Camino de Santiago (the Way of Saint James) on the 6th of May and am allowing 5 weeks to complete the 950km walk. A good friend of mine, Jacqui Gilbert will be accompanying me on this walk as my support person. She has a huge sporting background which includes competing in an Iron Man.

We will begin the walk at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the foothills of the Pyrenees and walk from the North East to North West of Spain. We will walk an average distance of 25km a day (with our longest day being 37km). We plan to walk all the way to the Coast, a place called Finisterre. This is further than the typical ancient pilgrimage route which typically finishes at Compestela. Here in Santiago de Compestala it is said that the bones of Saint James are entombed in the cathedral.

It is important to carry very little, so we will only pack the bare minimum - a change of clothes, a warm topand very basic toiletries. We will stay in pilgrim hostels along the way which give first priority to pilgrims. These can book out early in the afternoon as there can be a large number of pilgrims, so it will be important for us to head off very early each morning, so to get a place to stay in the evening.
